Seachem Purigen is a synthetic filtration resin that pulls dissolved organic waste out of the water before it breaks down into ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The result is water polished to a clarity that carbon doesn't match.
Unlike carbon, Purigen is regenerable — when the bag darkens from white to brown it's exhausted, and a bleach soak restores it for reuse. That makes it one of the cheaper long-term media you can run.
It's a favourite in planted tanks and shrimp tanks, where crystal-clear water is the point: nothing shows off a scape like water you can't see. Drop the bagged resin into your filter where flow passes through it.
