Rare Plecos in San Diego — L-Number Species & Exotic Catfish

Page Content

The common pleco is fine. It eats algae, it sits on driftwood, it grows way too big for your tank. But you're not here for the common pleco. You want the ones that make other hobbyists ask "what is that?"

We're talking L-number plecos. Hypancistrus zebra (L046) with its bold black and white stripes. The Galaxy Pleco (L029) with its starry pattern. The Gold Nugget Pleco (L018/L081/L085) with its bright yellow spots. The Royal Pleco (Panaque) with its striking dorsal fin and wood-chewing habits. These are the fish that turn a community tank into a collector's tank.

Pet Zone carries rare plecos from around the world. We're one of the few local fish stores in the US that regularly stocks hard-to-find pleco species, and our selection changes as new shipments come in.

Why Pet Zone Is the Best Choice for Rare Plecos in San Diego

Both Locations — What's Available Where

Convoy District / Kearny Mesa (Aquascape Specialty Store):

4160 Convoy St, San Diego, CA 92111

(858) 987-0309

Open 7 days a week, 10am–6pm

Convoy is the aquascaping store and tends to carry plecos suited for planted tanks — smaller species, L-numbers that work in community aquascapes. This is where you'll find Zebra Plecos, Clown Plecos, and other smaller rare species.

Mid-City / University Ave (Monster Fish & Koi Specialty Store):

4266 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92105

(619) 283-1812

Mon closed | Tue–Fri 10:30am–6pm | Sat 11am–6pm | Sun 11am–4pm

Mid-City leans toward monster fish, but they carry plecos too — including larger species and predatory catfish like Royal Plecos, larger Panaque species, and other big wood-eaters.

Online Shipping

We ship select plecos nationwide through PetZoneSD.com. Shipping days are generally Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Saturday shipping is available by request with a weekend surcharge. Overnight shipping via FedEx/UPS qualifies for our Live Arrival Guarantee — USPS does not.

Plecos are hardy shippers compared to some fish, but they still need someone present to receive the package. Don't let a Zebra Pleco sit outside in the heat.

FAQ

Q: What is an L-number?

A: L-numbers are a system used by the aquarium hobby to identify suckermouth catfish (Loricariidae) that haven't been formally described by science or are hard to distinguish. Each L-number refers to a specific species or variant. For example, L046 is the Zebra Pleco. It's a shorthand that collectors and stores use to communicate exactly which fish they're talking about.

Q: Do rare plecos eat algae?

A: Some do, some don't. Bristlenose and Gold Nugget plecos are good algae eaters. Zebra Plecos are primarily carnivorous and need meaty foods. Royal Plecos eat wood. Feeding a Zebra Pleco only algae wafers will starve it. Know your species — or ask us.

Q: Can I keep multiple pleco species together?

A: It depends. Some plecos are territorial with their own kind and with other bottom-dwelling fish. In a large enough tank with plenty of caves and hiding spots, you can keep multiple species. In a small tank, one pleco is usually plenty. Our staff can help you figure out compatibility.

Q: How big do rare plecos get?

A: It varies widely. Zebra Plecos stay around 4 inches. Clown Plecos max out around 3–4 inches. Royal Plecos can reach 12+ inches. Common plecos hit 18+ inches. Always check the adult size before buying — the cute 2-inch pleco at the store might be a monster in a year.
