This is where you'll find flowerhorns, arowanas, large-growing predators, and some of the best koi in San Diego County. We're the only store in San Diego that regularly carries flowerhorns and arowanas. If it gets big and eats aggressively, it's probably swimming in a tank on University Ave right now.

The only full-scale Nature Aquarium-focused aquascape store in San Diego. Bucephalandra, rare mosses, hardscape, shrimp, nano species, and the kind of fish you usually only see in competition tanks. We host aquascaping events with Tom Barr. This is where the planted-tank nerds live.

A: Yes. AFD's website currently displays "AFD IS CLOSED. OPENING IS TBD." Yelp marks the business as closed. Their storefront at 5121 Santa Fe St, San Diego is not operating. There's no confirmed reopening date. If you were an AFD customer, you're welcome at Pet Zone — we've got two stores and an online shop ready for you.

Q: Where are you located? AFD was in Pacific Beach / Morena area.
A: We have two locations. Our Mid-City store is at 4266 University Ave (about 10 minutes from where AFD was). Our Kearny Mesa store is at 4160 Convoy St in the Convoy District. Both are easy freeway access — Mid-City is right off the 15, Kearny Mesa is between the 805 and 163. If AFD was your local stop, either location is a short drive.

A: Mid-City (University Ave) is our monster fish and koi store. This is where you go for flowerhorns, arowanas, large predators, and pond koi. It's closed on Mondays. Kearny Mesa (Convoy St) is our aquascaping and rare species center — planted tanks, Bucephalandra, rare plecos, discus, nano fish, shrimp, and hardscape. It's open 7 days a week, 10 AM to 6 PM. Most people end up visiting both eventually.

A: 10 years. We're a family-owned and operated business. We've been through store moves, supply chain headaches, pandemics, and every fish disease that's made the rounds. A: Yes. We accept donations and surrenders of fish, aquatic livestock, plants, dry goods, and aquariums.
