If you are building a planted tank or a nature aquarium, this is the location to come to: hardscape, aquasoil, CO2, tools, plants, shrimp and the glassware, all in one place. Finding us and parking
We are inside Convoy Plaza, right between the 805 and the 163 freeways, two blocks south of Balboa Avenue. There is plenty of parking in the plaza lot. If you are coming from out of the area, the Convoy District is the Kearny Mesa neighborhood — easy to reach from either freeway and worth combining with a meal while you are here.
What you will find at Convoy
- Aquascaping hardscape — dragon stone, Wolf Stone, WIO stone and sand, driftwood. Worth choosing in person, since you are buying a specific shape rather than a SKU.
- Aquatic plants — tissue culture, potted and bunched, restocked most weeks.
- Freshwater shrimp and invertebrates — Neocaridina and Caridina lines, snails, and inverts for planted tanks.
- Substrate, CO2 and lighting — aquasoil, inert sand and gravel, regulators, diffusers and planted-tank LEDs.
- Tools and glassware — tweezers, scissors, lily pipes, inlets and outlets.
- Freshwater tropical fish — tetras, rasboras, corydoras, plecos, bettas and oddballs.
Workshops and demos
Because Hakkai is based at this location, Convoy is where our aquascaping classes and free demos run. If you have never scaped a tank before, watching one come together start to finish is worth more than any amount of reading.
Bring a water sample
We will test your water for free while you are here, and it takes about two minutes. San Diego tap water is hard and alkaline and treated with chloramine, all of which matters for what you can keep — it is worth knowing your own numbers rather than the city average.
