Peacock Eel (Macrognathus siamensis)

Peacock Eel (Macrognathus siamensis) – Exotic, Nocturnal Oddball for the Unique Aquarium

Add a touch of the exotic to your freshwater setup with the Peacock Eel, a peaceful and curious spiny eel known for its elongated body and eye-catching tail spots. A favorite among oddball and biotope aquarists, this species brings fascinating behavior and gentle charm to the right environment.

Key Features:

  • Slender, eel-like body with subtle striping and striking “peacock” eye-spots near the tail

  • Peaceful and shy – ideal for calm community tanks with similarly non-aggressive species

  • Nocturnal by nature – becomes more active in dim lighting or at night

  • Enjoys burrowing in soft substrates and hiding in driftwood or pipe structures

  • Recognizes routine and may even eat from the keeper’s hand with time

Care Tips:
Macrognathus siamensis thrives in soft, sandy substrates where it can burrow and feel secure. Provide ample hiding places such as caves, PVC tubes, or dense plant cover. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are known escape artists. Feed with live or frozen meaty foods like bloodworms, blackworms, or chopped earthworms, as they may ignore dry foods.

The Peacock Eel is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a peaceful oddball fish that adds both intrigue and beauty to a well-maintained aquarium.

Also known as the Peacock Eel.  These eels are fun to watch while they swim around the tank and make a great addition to your fish tanks!
They are the smallest species of the spiny eel family and max out at around 14".

They have cool movements and add a bit of exotic-ness to any freshwater tank. They are about 4-6" or so in size at the moment.

    Beautiful, Healthy Eel

Posted by Hopemarie Snyder on 28th Jun 2024

This is the first time I ever ordered from PetZone and I was a little worried about how it'd go but I'm happy I went through with it. I initially emailed the shop to make sure they had this species in stock (macrognathus siamensis, not macrognathus aral) and was pleased when they got back to me in less than 10 hours to tell me they indeed had macrognathus siamensis in stock. After scouring the internet, no one else had this particular species in stock so I was pleased when Petzone did, but since it was the first time I ordered I was a little worried. However, their prompt response to answering all my questions eased my mind a little.

I ordered Thursday Morning and I was shocked when the fish was shipped just a few hours later, and it arrived on my doorstep literally less than 24 hours after I placed the order. Out of the box, the eel was packed well and extremely healthy, she was swimming all over the bag and didn't have a single mark on her, she was flawless and beautiful (albeit a bit pale from stress.) I have confidence that she'll grow up to be a stunning eel.
I will not hesitate to order from this website again. Thanks so much for your prompt service and great product!
