Aquatic Plant Spotlight: Staurogyne Repens

When it comes to aquascaping there are different varieties of plants to accentuate different areas of the scape. A crucial aspect is foreground/ carpeting plants, these low growing aquatic plants form beautiful green carpets in the tank. Nothing highlights a scape like the beautiful carpeting of green healthy plants. Staurogyne Repens is a fantastic variety of foreground plant that originates from South America.

Small leaves shaped like a spade that are a robust green in color, healthy S.Repens will quickly grow into a thick bush. Very adaptable S.Repens has the ability to grown in emersed and submerged set ups. As with many other aquatic plants they appreciate quality aquariumsoil and regular CO2 injection, unstable parameters will result in melting, be mindful of the condition of your tank. Currently we have many tissue cultures of this variety, tissue culture plants are grown in vitro in a laboratory that deals in propagating aquatic plants. Not only are tissue cultures one of the best way to receive healthy specimen but it also provides protection from any unwanted pests. The tissue culture sits in a container with the roots in a gel that maintains the health of the plant while in the cup.

Once ready to introduce the tissue culture plant into your aquarium, gently remove the plant and wash off this gel from the roots. We suggest using aquatic plant tools such as long tweezers and curved scissors for maintenance and clean up. It will be helpful for the health of the plant and upkeep to trim off older stems and leaves that are melting. Understanding the components and varieties of aquascaping will help bring your vision to life.
