Start with the hardscape, not the plants
The stone and wood set the composition, and once plants grow in you cannot move them without tearing the scape apart. Lay the hardscape dry in the empty tank first and live with it for a day before you add a single gram of substrate.
Stone is not interchangeable. Seiryu and most gray mountain stones are calcareous — they leach carbonate and will raise your hardness and pH over time, which matters enormously if you are keeping Caridina shrimp or soft-water fish and not at all if you are keeping most community species. Dragon stone is inert and porous, takes moss and epiphytes beautifully, and is far more forgiving on water chemistry. Wolf Stone and the WIO range give you more angular, weathered structure. If you are unsure, tell us what fish you are planning and we will point you at the right rock.
Soil or sand?
Active aquasoils like UNS Controsoil hold nutrients in the substrate, buffer pH downward, and are what carpet plants and heavy root feeders want. They also leach ammonia for the first few weeks, which is why a soil tank needs to cycle before livestock goes in. Inert sand and gravel do none of that — they are the right call for a scape built on epiphytes like Anubias, Bucephalandra and ferns, where nothing is rooted in the substrate anyway.
What you actually need to start
Less than most guides suggest. A tank with a decent footprint, a light appropriate to the plants you have chosen, a gentle filter, substrate, hardscape and plants. CO2 is optional and becomes necessary only when you commit to carpets, red stems and high light. Long tweezers and curved scissors are the two tools that make planting bearable, and lily pipes are aesthetics rather than function — worth it when the rest of the scape has earned them.
Stone is worth choosing in person — you are buying a specific shape, not a SKU. Come pick your own pieces off the pallet.
