Product Description
Looking for a showpiece cichlid that is different from everything else in the tank? The Albino Heckelii is an eye-catching variation of the popular Threadfin Acara, featuring a creamy white to golden body, reddish eyes and beautiful extended fin rays that become increasingly impressive as the fish matures.
Albino Heckelii are active, intelligent cichlids with plenty of personality. They spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the aquarium, gently sifting through sand in search of food. As they grow, their elongated dorsal and tail fin extensions give them an elegant appearance that makes them stand out in larger South American community aquariums.
Compared with many similarly sized cichlids, Heckelii are generally manageable and relatively peaceful. However, they can become territorial as they mature, especially when breeding or establishing their favorite section of the aquarium.
Aquarium Care
A spacious, established aquarium with good filtration is strongly recommended. Use a soft sand substrate whenever possible, as these fish naturally enjoy digging and sifting through the bottom. Driftwood, smooth rocks and caves can be used to create sheltered areas while still leaving plenty of open swimming space.
Because Heckelii may rearrange the substrate, delicate plants should be protected or securely attached to wood and rocks. Hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern and larger Amazon Sword plants are generally better options.
Feeding
Albino Heckelii are omnivorous and should be offered a varied diet consisting of:
- Quality sinking cichlid pellets
- Frozen bloodworms
- Brine shrimp
- Mysis shrimp
- Krill
- High-quality flakes or granules
- Occasional vegetable-based foods
A varied diet will help support healthy growth, strong coloration and proper fin development.
Tank Mates
Suitable tank mates may include other medium-sized, relatively peaceful South American cichlids, Geophagus, Severums, larger peaceful catfish, Plecos, Silver Dollars and robust schooling fish.
Avoid keeping them with extremely aggressive cichlids or fish small enough to be swallowed. Provide additional space and hiding areas when maintaining multiple Heckelii or other territorial bottom-dwelling fish.
Important Notes
Juvenile coloration and fin development will continue to improve as the fish matures. Individual fish may vary slightly in color, pattern, body shape and fin length.
Please research the adult size and care requirements before purchasing. A larger aquarium will provide better long-term results and allow this fish to display more natural behavior.
