Horned Nerite Snail – Clithon corona

The Horned Nerite Snail is a small but striking freshwater snail known for its spiked, crown-like shell and excellent algae-eating abilities. Native to Southeast Asia, this unique invertebrate is a favorite among aquarists for its ornamental shell and low-maintenance, tank-cleaning behavior.

Features:

  • Distinctive horn-like spines on the shell – each snail is uniquely patterned

  • Excellent at removing algae from glass, plants, and décor

  • Completely peaceful and safe for community, shrimp, and planted tanks

  • Will not reproduce in freshwater – zero risk of overpopulation

Tank Requirements:

  • Clean, well-cycled freshwater aquarium with plenty of smooth surfaces

  • Tight-fitting lid – like all nerites, they may explore above the waterline

  • Avoid copper and harsh medications (harmful to invertebrates)

  • Provide supplemental algae wafers if natural algae is scarce

Behavior & Care:
Horned Nerites are active grazers that spend most of their time slowly crawling across tank surfaces in search of biofilm and algae. Though they may lay small, white, sesame-seed-like eggs on hard surfaces, these will not hatch in freshwater. They are completely non-aggressive and cohabitate well with even the most delicate tankmates.

Ideal For:
Aquarists of all skill levels looking for a functional and decorative addition to help manage algae in nano tanks, aquascapes, or peaceful community aquariums.

One of the smallest snails in the aquarium hobby, as well as the spikiest!

As nerites, these snails can live in fresh or brackish water tanks and range in color from light green-black, and often have well-defined stripes along their shells.

Also known as the Thorn Nerite Snail.
