Tiger Nerite Snail – Vittina semiconica
The Tiger Nerite Snail is a striking and efficient algae eater, prized by aquarists for its beautiful patterned shell and practical role in tank maintenance. With bold, tiger-like stripes in shades of orange, yellow, or black, this freshwater snail adds a splash of color and character to any aquarium.
Features:
-
Distinctive striped shell patterns – no two snails look exactly alike
-
Excellent algae grazer – helps keep glass, plants, and décor clean
-
Peaceful and safe for planted, shrimp, and community tanks
-
Will not reproduce in freshwater – no risk of overpopulation
Tank Requirements:
-
Freshwater tank with stable parameters and minimal copper exposure
-
Tight-fitting lid recommended – Nerites can occasionally climb out
-
Smooth surfaces and plenty of biofilm or algae to graze on
-
Supplemental food such as algae wafers if algae is limited
Behavior & Care:
Tiger Nerite Snails are extremely low-maintenance and compatible with almost all peaceful tankmates. They do not harm live plants and are especially effective in controlling algae without disrupting the ecosystem. While they may lay eggs in freshwater, the eggs will not hatch unless in brackish water.
Ideal For:
Aquarists of all experience levels looking for a natural solution to algae control and a visually appealing invertebrate that won’t disturb other inhabitants or overrun the tank.
Found in the coastal areas of Indonesia, these algae-eating snails are adaptable to freshwater and brackish water tanks! Like most nerites in the aquarium hobby, they only reproduce in brackish water and will not crowd your tank. Their name refers to their beautiful orange and black patterns on their shells!
Max size: 1"
Minimum tank size: 3 gallons
