Bolbitis heudelotii – African Water Fern

Bolbitis heudelotii, commonly known as the African Water Fern, is a graceful, slow-growing aquatic fern prized for its delicate, deeply lobed green leaves and elegant, flowing appearance. Native to the rivers and streams of tropical Africa, it’s ideal for adding texture and movement to aquascapes, especially in shaded or low-light areas.

Features:

  • Unique lace-like fronds with a soft, flowing appearance

  • Best attached to rocks, driftwood, or other hardscape

  • Provides excellent cover for shy fish and shrimp

  • Grows well in low-light, low-tech tanks

Growth & Care:

  • Lighting: Low to moderate (too much light may cause algae on fronds)

  • CO₂: Not required, but CO₂ and liquid fertilizers enhance growth

  • Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5 | Temperature 20–28°C (68–82°F)

  • Growth Rate: Slow and steady

  • Placement: Midground to background, or attached to hardscape

Care Tips:

  • Do not bury the rhizome—attach to hard surfaces using thread, glue, or fishing line

  • Avoid strong current directly on the plant; prefers gentle flow

  • Trim damaged or old fronds to encourage new, healthy growth

Ideal For:
Aquarists seeking a low-maintenance, visually striking plant that complements natural-style aquascapes. Perfect for shrimp tanks, blackwater setups, or planted tanks where subtle beauty and structure are key.
