Red Melon Panda Barb: A Peaceful and Colorful Schooling Fish
The Red Melon Panda Barb (Haludaria fasciata) is a vibrant freshwater species known for its stunning red-orange hues and unique dark vertical bars. Also commonly referred to as the Panda Barb or Melon Barb, this peaceful fish is an excellent choice for aquarists who want an active, schooling species that thrives in community aquariums.
Appearance
The Red Melon Panda Barb has a distinctive body shape with bright red-orange coloration that contrasts beautifully with the bold dark bands running along its body. These markings resemble a panda’s pattern, giving the fish its common name. Adults typically reach around 2.5–3 inches in length and look their best when kept in groups.
Behavior and Temperament
These barbs are peaceful and social schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more. They are active swimmers and bring constant movement to the aquarium, but they are not known for fin-nipping, making them excellent for community tanks.
