Otocinclus - The Tiny Sucker Mouth Wonder
Posted by Max Gandara on on 8th Sep 2022
Otocinclus also know as Oto Cats or Dwarf Suckers are tiny catfish native to South America. Similar to other Loricariids they are known for armor plated bodies and sucker mouths. Many display beautiful patterns across their bodies with a gray coloration. Often kept as algae eaters as they feed primarily on algae on roots and stones in nature. These diurnal catfish can be found in small streams clinging to substrate where they are safe from larger predators.
A few characteristics make the Oto Cat unique to other members of the Loricariids, one being their small size. The smallest variety max out at 2.4 cm with the largest being 5.5 cm. Also unique to the Oto Cat is that they lay adhesive eggs and do not stick around to guard them, generally other Loricariids build a nest and the male will stay by the eggs to ensure their safety. These dwarf suckers have a duct between the esophagus and the stomach that allow them to breathe air, another unique adaptation the Oto Cats have evolved to have. They appreciate well oxygenated slow flowing water and aquariums should be set up in a similar fashion.
We appreciate Oto Cats for their unique characteristics, small size and ability to maintain a clean tank through eating algae. They are fantastic with aquascape maintenance and pleasing to watch in groups. Unlike other Loricariids they do not eat the roots of plants but instead are a handy tool for a pristine planted tank. There are 19 species of Otocinclus currently described. We love these tiny catfish and typically have a few varieties on hand at all times.
