Otocinclus, often called “Otos” or dwarf suckermouth catfish, are small, peaceful freshwater fish known for their algae-eating abilities and gentle nature. Native to South American rivers, they are popular in planted aquariums for their natural cleaning habits, helping to keep tanks free of unwanted algae while blending seamlessly with the environment.
These fish thrive in groups, as they are highly social and feel most comfortable when kept with at least six or more of their kind. Otocinclus prefer calm, well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and stable water conditions. They are sensitive to water quality, so consistent maintenance and proper filtration are essential for their health and longevity.
Otocinclus are herbivorous and should be fed a diet rich in algae, supplemented with blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach and high-quality sinking wafers designed for herbivorous fish. Their small size and peaceful temperament make them excellent companions for other community fish, particularly small, non-aggressive species.
Ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists, Otocinclus combine practical algae control with an appealing, active presence in the aquarium. Their constant movement and endearing behavior make them a charming addition to any freshwater setup, adding both utility and personality to a community tank.
