Moonlight Gourami

The Moonlight Gourami (Trichopodus microlepis) is a graceful freshwater fish admired for its shimmering, silvery-white body that glows under aquarium lighting, resembling moonlight on water. Native to slow-moving rivers and swamps of Southeast Asia, this species is known for its peaceful temperament and elegant appearance, making it a popular choice for community aquariums.
Moonlight Gouramis are labyrinth fish, meaning they have a special organ that allows them to breathe air directly from the surface. This unique adaptation makes them hardy and adaptable to various water conditions. Their long, thread-like pelvic fins are sensitive feelers, which they use to explore their surroundings and interact with tank mates.
These fish prefer a calm, well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and subdued lighting. Floating plants are especially appreciated, as they help mimic the gourami’s natural habitat and make them feel secure. They do well in community setups with other peaceful species but should not be housed with overly aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
Feeding Moonlight Gouramis is simple, as they are omnivorous and accept a variety of foods. A diet of high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia will keep them healthy and enhance their natural glow.
Basic Care Guidelines:
* Tank size: 30 gallons or larger
* Temperature: 77°F – 86°F
* pH: 6.0 – 7.5
* Temperament: Peaceful, good for community tanks
* Diet: Omnivorous – flakes, pellets, frozen or live foods
The Moonlight Gourami is a beautiful and gentle fish that brings elegance and tranquility to any aquarium. With their glowing coloration, easygoing nature, and fascinating behaviors, they are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add both charm and serenity to their tank.
