Longfin Zebra Danio
The Longfin Zebra Danio (Danio rerio var. “Longfin”) is a lively and elegant freshwater fish that combines the energetic personality of the classic Zebra Danio with the graceful beauty of long, flowing fins. Originating from the streams and rice paddies of South Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, this hardy and active species has long been a favorite among aquarists of all experience levels.
The Longfin Zebra Danio is instantly recognizable by its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and striking horizontal blue and silver stripes that run from head to tail. What makes this variety special is its extended, delicate fins that flow gracefully as it swims, adding a touch of sophistication to any aquarium. Their constant movement and group behavior make them a lively and eye-catching addition to community tanks.
These fish are small, typically growing to about 2 inches in length, and thrive best in groups of six or more. Keeping them in schools helps reduce stress and brings out their natural, playful behavior. They are fast swimmers and appreciate a tank that’s at least 20 gallons, with plenty of open swimming space and gentle water movement.
The Longfin Zebra Danio is highly adaptable, making it one of the easiest fish to care for. They prefer a temperature range between 68–78°F and a pH of 6.5–7.5. These fish are also tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, which makes them great for beginners learning the basics of aquarium keeping. However, stable, clean water and good filtration will always help them thrive and display their best colors.
Feeding the Longfin Zebra Danio is simple. They are omnivores and accept almost any type of food, including flakes, micro pellets, frozen daphnia, and live brine shrimp. A balanced diet of both plant-based and protein-rich foods will keep them healthy and vibrant.
They are peaceful and social fish, making them perfect for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras, guppies, and corydoras catfish. Avoid keeping them with long-finned, slow-moving fish, as Zebra Danios are naturally curious and may occasionally nip fins.
Breeding Longfin Zebra Danios is relatively easy. They are egg scatterers, meaning they release eggs and sperm freely in the water, usually among fine plants or spawning mops. After spawning, it’s best to separate the adults, as they might eat the eggs. The fry hatch in about two days and can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flakes once they become free-swimming.
Overall, the Longfin Zebra Danio is a perfect mix of beauty, energy, and hardiness. Whether you’re new to the hobby or an experienced aquarist, this elegant little fish will add color, movement, and charm to your freshwater aquarium.
