The Leopard Ctenopoma (Ctenopoma acutirostre), also known as the Leopard Bushfish, is a fascinating freshwater fish native to slow-moving rivers and swamps in Central and West Africa. Known for its striking leopard-like spots, elongated body, and peaceful but slightly secretive nature, this fish is a popular choice for aquarists who enjoy unique and visually captivating species.

Leopard Ctenopomas are labyrinth fish, which means they can breathe atmospheric air using a specialized organ. This adaptation allows them to survive in oxygen-poor waters and makes them hardy and adaptable to a variety of aquarium setups. They are generally peaceful but may exhibit predatory behavior toward very small tank mates, so care should be taken when choosing companions.

In the aquarium, Leopard Ctenopomas prefer heavily planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots, driftwood, and subdued lighting that mimics their natural habitat. They are mostly nocturnal, often becoming more active during dawn, dusk, or at night. Their long fins and spotted pattern make them a striking presence when they glide slowly through the water.

Diet: Carnivorous – they thrive on live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, small fish, and insect larvae. High-quality meaty pellets can also be offered.

Basic Care Guidelines:

* Tank size: Minimum 30 gallons
* Temperature: 74°F – 82°F
* pH: 6.0 – 7.5
* Temperament: Peaceful but predatory toward very small fish
* Diet: Carnivorous – live, frozen, or pellet foods

The Leopard Ctenopoma is an elegant and intriguing fish that adds personality and visual interest to a freshwater aquarium. Its spotted pattern, labyrinth breathing ability, and calm, deliberate movements make it a fascinating species for hobbyists seeking a unique and eye-catching addition to their tank.
