Electric Yellow Cichlid: A Bright and Hardy African Cichlid
The Electric Yellow Cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus), also known as the Yellow Lab, is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly African cichlids. Native to the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, this species is prized for its vibrant golden-yellow coloration and relatively peaceful temperament compared to many other cichlids.
Appearance
Electric Yellow Cichlids are small to medium-sized cichlids that stand out with their brilliant lemon-yellow body and contrasting black markings along the dorsal fin and sometimes on the pelvic fins. Males and females look very similar, though males may develop slightly more intense coloration as they mature.
Behavior and Temperament
Unlike many Mbuna cichlids, Electric Yellow Cichlids are less aggressive, making them an excellent choice for community setups with other Malawi cichlids. They are active, social fish that thrive in groups and will often interact with their environment and tank mates.
Tank Requirements
-
Tank Size: 40+ gallons
-
Water Temperature: 76–82°F
-
pH Range: 7.8–8.6
-
Water Hardness: 10–20 dGH
-
Aquascape: Rocky structures with caves and hiding places, along with open swimming areas
A well-aquascaped tank with plenty of territories helps reduce aggression and encourages natural behaviors.
Diet
Electric Yellow Cichlids are omnivores and should be fed a balanced diet:
-
High-quality cichlid pellets
-
Spirulina-based foods
-
Occasional vegetable matter (blanched spinach, zucchini, or peas)
-
Small amounts of protein foods such as brine shrimp (in moderation)
A diet rich in plant matter helps prevent digestive issues common in many African cichlids.
Tank Mates
These cichlids are best suited for community setups with other Mbuna or peaceful Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament. Suitable tank mates include:
-
Acei Cichlids (Pseudotropheus acei)
-
Rusty Cichlids (Iodotropheus sprengerae)
-
Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara) in larger tanks
Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species or fish small enough to be bullied.
Breeding
Electric Yellow Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. Females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths for about three weeks until the fry are ready to swim freely. Breeding is relatively easy in a well-maintained tank with stable water conditions and plenty of hiding spaces for fry.
