Congo Tetra – A Vibrant and Peaceful Freshwater Fish
The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a stunning freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors, flowing fins, and peaceful temperament. Native to the Congo River Basin in Africa, it adds elegance and movement to any community aquarium.
Congo Tetras display metallic shades of blue, red, gold, and purple. Males are especially colorful with long, flowing fins, while females are slightly smaller with less elaborate fins.
These fish grow to around 3 inches and can live up to 5 to 8 years. They thrive in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of swimming space and should be kept in schools of at least six. A planted tank with open swimming areas and gentle water flow is ideal.
Congo Tetras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) with temperatures between 73–82°F and moderate hardness. They are omnivorous and eat flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen treats like brine shrimp or daphnia.
Peaceful and social, Congo Tetras get along well with other non-aggressive fish of similar size. Breeding requires a separate tank with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants, with adults removed after spawning to protect the eggs.
Congo Tetras are perfect for aquarists seeking a colorful, peaceful, and lively addition to a freshwater community aquarium.
