Blood Parrot Cichlid: A Colorful and Controversial Aquarium Favorite

The Blood Parrot Cichlid is one of the most recognizable and debated fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its bold coloration, quirky behavior, and distinctive shape, this hybrid cichlid has carved out a place in many freshwater aquariums worldwide. Whether you love them for their personality or admire their unusual look, Blood Parrots are a fascinating fish worth understanding.

What Is a Blood Parrot Cichlid?

The Blood Parrot Cichlid is a man-made hybrid, believed to be a cross between the Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) and the Redhead Cichlid (Paraneetroplus synspilus). First developed in Taiwan in the late 1980s, this hybrid was initially met with controversy due to its unnatural appearance and anatomical quirks.

Blood Parrots are characterized by:

  • A rounded, oval body shape

  • A small, beak-like mouth that doesn't fully close

  • Vibrant orange, red, or yellow coloration

  • A pronounced nuchal hump (especially in older specimens)

Despite their unusual anatomy, Blood Parrots have become popular for their vibrant color and outgoing personality.

Behavior & Personality

These cichlids are intelligent, interactive, and full of personality. Many hobbyists report that their Blood Parrots recognize them and beg for food at the front of the tank. They are generally peaceful compared to other cichlids but can become territorial during feeding or spawning.

They do best when kept either alone, in pairs, or in community setups with similarly sized fish that are not overly aggressive. Avoid keeping them with very small or delicate fish, as Blood Parrots may chase or intimidate them.

Aquarium Setup

Blood Parrots require a well-maintained aquarium with plenty of space and proper filtration. Here’s what they need to thrive:

Ideal Tank Conditions:

  • Tank Size: 30 gallons minimum for one; larger if keeping multiple

  • Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel

  • Decor: Caves, driftwood, rocks, and hiding places

  • Filtration: Strong and efficient – they are messy eaters

Diet & Feeding

Blood Parrots are omnivores and not picky eaters. Their diet should be balanced to support their immune system and coloration.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes

  • Frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and krill

  • Occasional blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)

Due to their small, deformed mouths, choose soft or small foods that are easy for them to eat.

Breeding Behavior

Blood Parrots may pair off and go through spawning rituals, but successful breeding is rare. Many males are infertile due to the hybrid nature of the fish. That said, females may lay eggs, and in some cases, they may crossbreed with other cichlid species under the right conditions.
