Black Arowana

The Black Arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai) is a majestic freshwater fish native to the blackwater rivers of the Amazon Basin. Known for its striking metallic black coloration and large, elongated body, this fish is a true centerpiece for any large aquarium. Often referred to as a “dragon fish” due to its shimmering scales and graceful movements, the Black Arowana is highly prized by aquarists for both its beauty and impressive size.

Black Arowanas are surface-dwelling predators that feed primarily on insects, smaller fish, and crustaceans in the wild. They are famous for their jumping ability, often leaping out of the water to catch prey, so a tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential. Despite their predatory nature, they can be kept in community setups with other large, robust fish, though tank mates should be chosen carefully to avoid predation.

These fish are intelligent and curious, often recognizing their owners and exhibiting interactive behaviors. Their large scales and long pectoral fins give them an elegant appearance, while their slow, deliberate movements add a sense of majesty to the aquarium.

Care requirements are advanced due to their size and predatory habits: they need a very large aquarium, excellent filtration, and high water quality. Their diet in captivity should include a variety of protein-rich foods such as feeder fish, shrimp, and specially formulated pellets to ensure proper growth and health.

Basic Care Guidelines:

* Tank size: Minimum 500 gallons for adult specimens
* Temperature: 75°F – 82°F
* pH: 6.0 – 7.0
* Temperament: Predatory, can be aggressive with smaller fish
* Diet: Carnivorous – feeder fish, shrimp, pellets

The Black Arowana is a stunning and commanding addition to a large freshwater aquarium. Its shimmering black scales, graceful swimming, and fascinating behaviors make it one of the most impressive freshwater species available to aquarists who can meet its demanding care requirements. Properly cared for, a Black Arowana can live for many years, growing into a true freshwater giant admired for both its beauty and presence.
