The Bala Shark Minnow (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) is a stunning and active freshwater fish that adds elegance and movement to large aquariums. Despite its name, it is not a true shark but rather a member of the minnow family. Its streamlined, metallic silver body with striking black-edged fins and forked tail gives it a sleek, shark-like appearance that immediately draws attention.
Bala Shark Minnows are peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups of at least 4 to 6. In the wild, they are schooling fish, and keeping them in groups in captivity helps reduce stress, encourage natural behaviors, and create a more vibrant display in the aquarium. Because of their active swimming habits and potential to grow up to 12-14 inches in length, they require a large aquarium—ideally 125 gallons or more for a group.
These fish appreciate tanks with wide open swimming spaces along with some decorations and plants around the edges to provide security and resting spots. They are known for being jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is important to prevent accidents. Clean, well-filtered water with stable parameters is crucial for their health. Regular water changes and strong filtration systems will keep their environment healthy and ensure their colors stay vibrant.
Bala Shark Minnows are omnivorous and will readily accept a wide variety of foods. High-quality flakes or pellets should form the base of their diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A varied diet helps support their active lifestyle, enhance their natural coloration, and maintain overall health.
These fish are hardy and generally peaceful, making them a good choice for large community aquariums with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Their graceful movements and schooling behavior make them a favorite among aquarists who can provide the space and care they need. With proper care, Bala Shark Minnows can live for many years and become a lively and impressive highlight of any freshwater aquarium.
