Assassin Snail

The Assassin Snail (Clea helena) is a fascinating and highly useful freshwater snail known for its predatory habits and unique appearance. Recognizable by its conical shell, which is usually brown with yellowish or tan bands, the Assassin Snail is a natural solution for controlling unwanted snail populations in aquariums.
Unlike typical snails that feed on algae or plants, Assassin Snails are carnivorous and specifically hunt other snails. They are slow-moving hunters that detect and consume pest snails, making them ideal for aquarists dealing with overpopulation of smaller snail species like pond snails or ramshorn snails. Despite their predatory nature, they pose no threat to fish, shrimp, or plants.
Assassin Snails are relatively easy to care for and can thrive in a wide range of freshwater aquarium setups. They prefer a substrate where they can bury themselves partially, such as sand or fine gravel, and enjoy a tank with hiding places like rocks, plants, or driftwood. These snails are also known to reproduce slowly, giving aquarists more control over population growth in the tank.
Diet: Primarily other snails, but if food is scarce, they may accept sinking carnivore pellets.
Basic Care Guidelines:
* Tank size: 5 gallons or larger
* Temperature: 68°F – 82°F
* pH: 6.5 – 8.0
* Temperament: Predatory on snails, peaceful with other tank inhabitants
* Diet: Carnivorous – pest snails or sinking carnivore pellets
The Assassin Snail is both a unique and practical addition to freshwater aquariums. With its elegant shell, slow and deliberate movements, and natural pest control abilities, it is perfect for hobbyists looking to maintain a balanced and healthy tank while adding an interesting species to observe.
