Pike Cichlids

Pike cichlids ( Crenicichla ) are a unique variety of Cichlid with large mouths and elongated bodies. Originating from South America, their care is quite similar to other varieties of SA Cichlids. Many species of pike Cichlid have beautiful markings across the body, some with black stripes, some have black dots and some with magnificent coloration (Crenicichla zebrina being a notable species). The torpedo shaped body makes for a fast and able predator, tank mates should be chosen with care.

Generally speaking if another tank mate can fit in the mouth it will become a meal. They appreciate hiding spaces with vegetation and driftwood to emulate their natural habitats. Typically ranging from 6 inches to 12 inches (though dwarf varieties exist around 2.5”) they should have ample space to move within a tank and may be upsized as the fish grows. In nature they will hide around a log or rock and wait for an opportunity to strike, feeding on fish, insects and other small animals. In the aquarium a well-balanced Pellet and an occasional treat such as feeders or frozen foods are great options for a healthy fish.

Their predatory behavior and torpedo shape resemblant of actual Pike fish gives the Pike Cichlid its commonly dubbed name. Described as early as 1840 Pike Cichlids are well studied and appreciated throughout the hobby. It’s a pleasure to offer these fish! Please reach out for further information.
