Features:
-
Beautiful, maze-like or geometric shell patterns in earthy tones
-
Highly effective at consuming algae on glass, plants, and decorations
-
Completely peaceful and ideal for planted or shrimp tanks
-
No reproduction in freshwater – no risk of population booms
Tank Requirements:
-
Freshwater setup with stable, clean water parameters
-
Algae-rich surfaces or supplemental feeding (algae wafers, blanched veggies)
-
Tight-fitting lid – like other nerites, Batik Nerites may explore above the waterline
-
Avoid copper-based medications (toxic to invertebrates)
Behavior & Care:
The Batik Nerite Snail is a low-maintenance, solitary grazer that will spend its time scouring surfaces for algae and biofilm. It’s completely non-aggressive and safe to keep with delicate tankmates, including dwarf shrimp. While they may deposit small white eggs on surfaces, these will not hatch in freshwater.
Ideal For:
Aquarists looking for a rare, decorative snail that offers both beauty and function. Perfect for community tanks, nano aquariums, and planted setups where algae control and aesthetics are top priorities.
Named for the intricate patterns that resemble those of the famed batik fabrics of Java, Indonesia, these snails not only look stunning but are great algae eaters as well! They can live in slightly brackish or freshwater conditions, but will only reproduce in brackish water.
