Xingu Peacock Bass (Cichla melaniae)

The Xingu Peacock Bass is one beastly monster fish in the Cichla family.  Though they typically do not get bigger than 15", these beasts are known to grow well into the 18-28" range.

Xingu Peacock Bass (Cichla melaniae) is a striking and powerful freshwater fish native to the Xingu River basin in Brazil. Known for its vibrant colors and impressive size, this species is highly sought after by experienced aquarists and predatory fish enthusiasts.

The Xingu Peacock Bass displays a bold pattern of vertical stripes and a mix of golden, green, and orange hues, with a distinctive black spot near the tail. Its streamlined body and strong, muscular build make it a fast and agile swimmer, adding a dynamic presence to any large aquarium.

This species is predatory and requires a diet rich in meaty foods such as live or frozen fish, shrimp, and other protein-rich options. Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining their health, coloration, and growth.

Xingu Peacock Bass require a spacious tank with plenty of swimming room, robust filtration, and regular water changes to maintain optimal water quality. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a temperature range of 78–84°F (25–29°C). Tank décor should include hiding spots and open swimming areas, as they are territorial and may exhibit aggression toward smaller or weaker tank mates.

Ideal for advanced aquarists, the Xingu Peacock Bass is a captivating centerpiece fish that demonstrates both beauty and power. Its impressive size, striking coloration, and active behavior make it a standout addition to a well-maintained, species-appropriate aquarium.

They are currently about 2.5" - 3" and currently feeding on live food though we are attempting to wean them onto dry foods.
