Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum)

Silver Arowana – Osteoglossum bicirrhosum

The Silver Arowana is an iconic freshwater species revered for its sleek, metallic sheen, graceful swimming motion, and surface-dwelling behavior. Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin, this ancient fish brings both elegance and prehistoric appeal to large aquariums.

Features:

  • Long, streamlined body with iridescent silver scales

  • Distinctive upturned mouth and twin barbels for surface feeding

  • Known for powerful jumps – often called the "monkey fish"

  • Highly intelligent and responsive to its keeper

Tank Requirements:

  • Very large aquarium with ample surface area and length

  • Secure, tightly fitting lid (can leap several feet out of the water)

  • Low current and dim lighting preferred to mimic natural habitat

  • Smooth décor and open swimming space to prevent injury

Behavior & Care:
Silver Arowanas are predatory and require a high-protein diet of fish, shrimp, insects, and quality pellets. They are best kept alone or with large, non-aggressive tankmates. This species is sensitive to water quality and demands stable conditions and frequent maintenance. Due to their size and power, they are best suited to experienced aquarists.

Ideal For:
Advanced hobbyists with the space and dedication to house a large, surface-oriented predator. With proper care, the Silver Arowana can become a long-lived, impressive centerpiece.

This is by far the most popular Arowana species in the fish keeping hobby.  The Silver Arowana (some spell it as Arahuana) is indigenous to South America, found in the Amazon River Basin.  These natural carnivores are known to eat practically any creature it can fit into its mouth, including baby monkeys.  In the wild, they are known to grow up to nearly 4 feet long.  A tightly secured cover is required as the Silver Arowana is known to jump.

All our silver arowanas are very healthy and just full of energy!

Sizes:

Between 6 inches roughly.

What a beautiful fish. I have been waiting to add an Aro to my tanks. I want to thank Powell Hean for personally contacting me on my order. The Arowana arrived in less than 24 hours and very well packed. I can't thank Pet Zone enough for all their help and for answering all of my questions. I will continue to purchase from them.
