Peppered Corydoras (Corydoras paleatus)
The Peppered Corydoras, also known as the Peppered Cory Catfish, is a peaceful and hardworking bottom-dweller that makes an excellent addition to freshwater community aquariums. Originating from the slow-moving streams and ponds of South America, particularly in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, this species is loved for its friendly behavior and ease of care.
Peppered Corydoras have a light tan or grayish body covered with dark mottled spots and patterns, giving them their “peppered” appearance. They typically grow to around 2.5 inches in length and have armored plates instead of scales, along with a pair of small barbels around the mouth used to search for food in the substrate.
These fish are very social and should be kept in groups of at least 4 to 6 individuals. When kept in schools, they display more natural and active behavior, often seen scavenging the tank bottom together in search of leftover food.
They thrive in water temperatures between 72°F and 78°F, with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. A soft sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels. Adding driftwood, live plants, and shaded areas will help create a comfortable and natural environment.
Peppered Corydoras are omnivores and will readily eat a variety of foods such as sinking pellets, algae wafers, flakes, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp. They play an important role in keeping the aquarium clean by consuming uneaten food, but they should still be fed directly to ensure proper nutrition.
These peaceful fish are compatible with most small, non-aggressive tank mates, including tetras, rasboras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish that might disturb them.
Hardy, gentle, and full of personality, the Peppered Corydoras is a wonderful choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. With proper care and a well-maintained aquarium, they can live up to 5 years or longer.
