Black Moors

The Black Moor Goldfish is a unique and popular variety of fancy goldfish, admired for its deep black coloration and distinctive appearance. A type of telescope goldfish, the Black Moor is characterized by its protruding eyes, rounded body, and flowing fins, which give it a graceful and elegant look as it swims.

Originating from selective breeding of goldfish in Asia, Black Moors are hardy and adaptable, making them a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. They are peaceful community fish and do well when housed with other slow-moving fancy goldfish varieties. Because of their poor eyesight from protruding eyes, they may struggle to compete for food with faster tankmates, so special attention should be given during feeding.

Black Moors can grow up to 6–8 inches in length and thrive in aquariums of at least 20–30 gallons for a single fish, with larger tanks being needed for groups. They prefer cooler water compared to tropical fish, with an ideal temperature range of 65–75°F. A good filtration system is important since goldfish produce a lot of waste, and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.

In terms of diet, Black Moors are omnivorous and should be fed a mix of high-quality goldfish pellets or flakes, along with supplemental foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables such as peas or spinach. A varied diet supports their overall health and helps maintain their coloration.

One notable feature of Black Moor Goldfish is that their jet-black coloration may change over time. As they age, some may lighten to a bronze or gold tone, which is completely natural.

With proper care, Black Moors can live 10–15 years or longer. Their peaceful nature, striking appearance, and charming personalities make them a favorite among goldfish enthusiasts and a captivating addition to coldwater aquariums.
