Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis)
The Bamboo Shrimp is a peaceful freshwater shrimp known for its unique fan-feeding behavior. Native to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, these shrimp use their fan-like appendages to filter tiny food particles from the water. They are an interesting addition to community aquariums and provide engaging behavior to observe.
Bamboo Shrimp grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches in length and have a brownish or reddish segmented body with banded legs and large feathery fan-like appendages called chelipeds. They are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them compatible with most community fish that do not nip at their fans. They are mostly active during low light or at night.
They thrive in well-established aquariums with stable water conditions and good water flow to bring food to their fans. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended, with water temperature between 72–82°F and pH 6.5–7.5. Provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, and plants, and ensure smooth surfaces to avoid injury.
Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders but can also eat finely crushed flake or pellet food, powdered shrimp food, and small live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp or microplankton. They should be fed in a way that the food is carried to their fan appendages by water flow.
They are peaceful and can be kept with tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small peaceful gouramis. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
Like all shrimp, Bamboo Shrimp molt as they grow and are vulnerable during this time. Hiding spots reduce stress, and maintaining stable water quality is essential. Breeding in captivity is very difficult because their larvae require brackish water.
Bamboo Shrimp are a unique and captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium. Their fan-feeding behavior is fascinating and functional, helping to keep the water clean while adding movement and interest. With proper water conditions, hiding spots, and moderate flow, Bamboo Shrimp thrive and provide a peaceful and visually striking presence in the tank.
