Acclimation upon arrival

Acclimating freshwater fish to a new aquarium is a crucial step to
ensure their well-being. Proper acclimation helps fish adjust to
differences in water parameters and reduces stress. Here's a detailed
guide on how to acclimate freshwater fish:
Materials Needed:
Established aquarium water (cycled tank)
A clean bucket
Fish net
Water testing kit
Step-by-Step Acclimation Process:
1. Prepare the New Aquarium:
Established aquarium with appropriate substrate, decorations, and
filtration. Ensure that the water temperature, pH, and other parameters
match the existing aquarium as closely as possible.
2. Turn Off Lights:
Dim the lights in both the existing and new aquariums. This helps reduce stress on the fish during the acclimation process.
3. Float the Bag:
Float the sealed bag containing the fish in the new aquarium. This
allows the water inside the bag to gradually adjust to the temperature
of the new tank.
4. Equalize Temperature:
After about 15 minutes, open the bag and use a thermometer to
check if the water temperature in the bag is close to that of the new
tank. If needed, adjust by adding small amounts of water from the new
tank to the bag.
5. Add Small Amounts of New Tank Water:
Begin adding small amounts of water from the new aquarium into the
bag at regular intervals. This helps the fish
acclimate to differences in water chemistry. Be cautious not to overfill
the bag.
6. Test Water Parameters:
Periodically test the water in the bag for parameters such as pH,
ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. This ensures that the fish are not
exposed to sudden changes that could be harmful.
7. Use Drip Acclimation (Method 2):
If time allows, consider using the drip acclimation method. Empty the bag into a bucket and use airline tubing to create a
siphon. Adjust the drip rate to allow a slow, steady flow of water into
the bag. This will slowly acclimate the fish to the tank water. After about 30 mins take the fish out of the bucket and directly into the tank without mixing water from the bag.
8. Net the Fish:
Once the fish have been acclimated for around 20 minutes,
carefully use a fish net to transfer them from the bag to the new
aquarium. Avoid adding water from the bag to the new tank to prevent
introducing potential pathogens.
9. Monitor Behavior:
Observe the fish closely for signs of stress. If possible, keep the
lights dim for the first few hours to allow them to settle into their
new environment.
10. Post-Acclimation Care:
Continue monitoring water parameters in the new aquarium over the
next few days. Ensure that the fish are feeding and behaving normally.
By following these acclimation steps, you provide freshwater fish with a
smoother transition into their new environment, reducing stress and
promoting their overall health.
