Black Arowana – Osteoglossum ferreirai

Sleek, mysterious, and highly sought after, the Black Arowana is a stunning freshwater predator native to the Rio Negro basin in South America. With its dark, velvety coloration as a juvenile that gradually shifts to a metallic sheen in adulthood, this species is both a visual standout and a symbol of status among experienced aquarists.

Features:

  • Striking dark coloration in juveniles, developing into a steely black or bluish-silver hue

  • Long, graceful body with characteristic barbels and large, reflective scales

  • Surface-dwelling predator known for impressive jumping ability

  • Closely related to the Silver Arowana but generally considered more exotic

Tank Requirements:

  • Large, elongated aquarium or indoor pond with a tight-fitting, secure lid

  • Low lighting and tannin-rich water (driftwood, Indian almond leaves) to mimic natural habitat

  • Excellent filtration and consistent water parameters essential

  • Minimal décor to allow for open swimming and prevent injury

Behavior & Care:
The Black Arowana is carnivorous and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, fish, insects, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Best housed alone or with other large, peaceful species that won't fit in its mouth. This species is intelligent, reactive, and can form a bond with its keeper over time.

Ideal For:
Advanced aquarists with the space, experience, and dedication to care for a large, powerful fish with specific environmental needs. When properly maintained, the Black Arowana becomes an elegant and captivating focal point.

Current batch is about 8-10 inches in size (as of Jan. 2024).
