Dwarf Shrimp For Freshwater Aquariums

Shrimp have been in the aquatic hobby for quite some time but here in the states, there's been a huge resurgence in shrimp keeping these last few years as the aquascaping hobby grows here. Not only do Dwarf Shrimp complement a planted tank well but they also play a role in keeping the surfaces and plants clean and free of algae.

Shrimp come in all different colors and patterns and the two main Shrimp species you'll find at your local fish stores or online will be the world famous Neocaridina (commonly known as the Cherry Shrimp) and the Caridina Shrimp (commonly known as the Bee Shrimp). Within these two species, internationally renowned breeders have selectively bred them in varying coloration and patterns, creating a craze for Dwarf Shrimp demand worldwide.

1. Neocaridina Shrimp - 'Neocaridina davidi' (Cherry Shrimp and its variants)

When one thinks of the Neocaridina, the Cherry Shrimp comes to mind. With ambitious breeders worldwide creating their "own line" of Shrimp strains, you'll find Neos that are yellow, red, black and even striped or speckled as a result of selectively breeding traits and mutations found in individual shrimp.

The Neocaridina is a fairly hardy shrimp and can thrive in a wide range of parameters from slight acidic to neutral pH. They're a prolific breeder and can breed in a wide range of pH levels, making them an easier choice compared to their Caridina counterparts.

Caridina Shrimp ' Caridina Cantonensis' (Bee Shrimp, Crystal Black Shrimp + their variants)

The Bee Shrimp is similar to the Neocaridinas in shape and size though they are considered a more finicky Dwarf Shrimp. They do require acidic water to thrive and can be hard to keep as they require stable parameters and a low TDS level comparable to the native waterways they're from in their native Taiwan.

The Crystal Black Shrimp aka Bee Shrimp is the most commonly strain and the Crystal Red Variant is also quite popular and seen in nearly every local fish store. Other strains include the Blue Bolt and King Kong (Black and Red variants both look magnificent).
