Silver Dollar Fish

The Silver Dollar Fish, also known as Metynnis spp., is a popular freshwater fish recognized for its round, silver-colored body that resembles a coin. Its shiny, reflective scales and peaceful nature make it an attractive addition to community aquariums.

Silver Dollar Fish are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least five or more. They are peaceful and get along well with other non-aggressive tank mates of similar size. However, due to their herbivorous nature, they may nibble on soft-leaved plants, so choosing hardy plants or providing plenty of leafy vegetables is recommended.

These fish prefer a spacious aquarium with open swimming areas and some planted zones. Driftwood and rocks can be added for decoration, but they need plenty of room to swim freely. They thrive in water temperatures between 75°F–82°F, with a pH of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Stable water conditions are important to keep them healthy and stress-free.

Silver Dollar Fish are primarily herbivores, and their diet should include high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with fresh vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and peas. They may also accept occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. A varied diet ensures they remain healthy and maintain their bright silver coloration.

Breeding Silver Dollar Fish in home aquariums can be challenging, as they require specific water conditions and a separate breeding tank. They are egg scatterers, and the adults may eat their eggs if not separated. Fry should be fed finely crushed flake food or specialized fry food.
